Discover a New Detroit Cocktail Bar
When outsiders think of Detroit, they might think of Motown music, rectangular pizza or motorcars—but a new wave of sophisticated cocktail bars has been popping up around town in recent years. From immersive molecular cocktail labs to back-alley daiquiri joints, these hidden sanctuaries are worth the search.
The latest arrival to the scene is Candy Detroit cocktail bar, a trendy, subterranean spot that’s making a big splash with its 100% cotton-pink decor and 1500-piece Murano glass chandelier. The sultry, fairytale-like space—which was once an old Casey’s pub—has a series of private booths that feel like cozy hideaways, with orange and chrome tones that channel retro-futurism. The menu is also noteworthy, with creative cocktails like the Cocoa Chanel (coconut-infused vodka and chocolate-dipped strawberry) and a seasonal Orchard Sour that comes garnished with actual candyfloss.

Another newcomer that’s already turning heads is Chartreuse, a Midtown spot named after the French herbal liqueur of the same name. The spot is by reservation only, and its spooky atmosphere—complete with illuminati signs, watchful eyes and hexagon-shaped tables—helps maintain the bar’s intimate, mysterious vibe. Fans of the green spirit can get their fix here with rare and older bottles of Chartreuse mixed into inventive cocktails like the Last Word, a spin on the traditional Manhattan.
Then there’s the recently opened Tenacity Craft, a minimally decorated beer bar that puts the focus squarely on its robust selection of expressive beers and spirits. The sultry, underground space has a long booth that spans the length of the bar and even features a gorgeous pheasant mural on one wall. The cocktail menu includes a few well-executed classics, but the real draw is the extensive collection of whiskey and gin.
